The police had finally figured out the modus operandi of a gang of jewel thieves that had been robbing apartments on the east side of town. The thieves had gathered information thru' their front organisation, the Bide-A-Wee Child Care Service.

Bide-A-Wee supplied young women as baby-sitters to their east side clients. The baby sitter would size up the apartment and supply information about where the occupants stashed their money and valuables. Several days after the baby-sitter first arrived, the apartment would be robbed.

When they had enough information to make a case, the police raided the Bide-A-Wee offices. In addition to several young women waiting for baby-sitting assignments, the police founded a number of well-known local burglars. Detective Randolph, in charge of the operation, barked out orders to the uniformed police officers who made up the raiding party.

"We'll do the premises after we get all these people to the station house," he said.

"FIRST, I WANT YOU TO SEARCH EVERY CROOK AND NANNY IN THE PLACE."
